Novartis India to Acquire Pfizer’s Minipress Trademarks for ₹1,250 Crore

Key Highlights:

  • Novartis India has approved the acquisition of Minipress and Minipres trademarks and related intellectual property rights from Pfizer for approximately ₹1,250 crore. The transaction covers trademarks registered in India, with signing and closing scheduled simultaneously.
  • Minipress XL (prazosin) is primarily used for hypertension and urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The brand recorded ₹228.6 crore in revenue in the 12 months to July 2026 and grew at a 6.3% CAGR over four years.
  • Pfizer will discontinue marketing, distribution and sale of Minipress XL in India following its decision to discontinue manufacturing the product. The acquisition gives Novartis an established cardiovascular brand while Pfizer exits the product.

Implications:

Novartis India’s acquisition of the Minipress and Minipres trademarks from Pfizer gives it an established cardiovascular brand in hypertension and BPH, while Pfizer exits a product it is discontinuing globally. The deal values Minipress XL at a significant premium to its current sales, indicating that Novartis is paying for long‑term brand equity and market share in the prazosin segment rather than immediate cash flow.
