Key Highlights:
- Dr. Reddy’s has launched Obeda (oral semaglutide tablets) in India for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, further expanding its GLP-1 portfolio following recent generic semaglutide injection launches in India and Canada. The once-daily oral biosimilar is available in 3mg, 7mg, and 14mg strengths at prices of Rs. 99, Rs. 135, and Rs. 225 per tablet, respectively
- Obeda received approval from India’s CDSCO based on a Phase III study involving 288 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in India, demonstrating non-inferior efficacy and comparable safety to the innovator oral semaglutide. The study also showed similar improvements in fasting and post-prandial glucose, weight reduction, glycemic control, and HbA1c outcomes, with no anti-drug antibodies detected
- India currently has more than 101M adults living with diabetes and nearly 136M prediabetic individuals, highlighting the growing need for accessible metabolic disease therapies. Dr. Reddy’s noted that Obeda is developed and formulated in-house using recombinant DNA-derived semaglutide API, supporting the company’s strategy to strengthen reliable supply, affordability, and long-term access to GLP-1 therapies in India and global markets
Implications:
Obeda gives Dr. Reddy’s a second GLP‑1 foothold in India, but this time in the much bigger day‑to‑day diabetes market, not just injectable semaglutide. Because it is an oral tablet priced far below branded innovators, it should broaden access and put pressure on premium oral semaglutide pricing and future launch strategies.
The bigger market implication is that Dr. Reddy’s is building a full semaglutide franchise across injections and tablets in India and abroad, which could strengthen its position as a low‑cost GLP‑1 supplier in a country with a huge diabetes burden. If uptake is strong, Obeda could also help normalize oral GLP‑1 use in India and make metabolic care more affordable for a much larger patient pool.
